Tips to Pass Along to your Car-Loving Clients

The 2009 hurricane season has officially kicked off and with it comes the possibility that this one will be more destructive than the last.  As you know, many of your car-loving clients often make large investments in their collector vehicles, so it’s important to make sure they are protected should a hurricane make a sudden appearance. Here are a few tips you can pass along to help keep their vehicles safe from strong winds, falling debris, floodwater and more:

  • Use a waterproof/padded tarp on the vehicle to protect against saturated drywall and debris falling onto the vehicle.

  • Remove heavy objects from shelves and items such as bikes hanging from the ceiling. Place tools and large objects on the floor.

  • Shore up the garage door (the largest opening to the house) using special products, lumber, and/or hardware.

  • Secure any openings to the attic from the garage with latches or lumber.

  • Use plywood to protect garage windows. Window films provide some protection against shattering, but 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch thick plywood is a better option. Hurricane shutters are preferable to sunshades on windows.

  • Keep automobile titles and other documents sealed in plastic bags in a safe or a large, heavy container that won’t get lost.

  • Participate in a car club. Contact fellow car lovers as the best source for local and regional repair shops and other resources before, during and after an emergency.

What do you do to keep your home/car safe during hurricane season?  Let us know!

Fun Times at the Open House

We want to send a big thank you to all who were in attendance on Tuesday for our Open House celebration.  It was a great time with some cool cars, fun stories and a chance to meet some of our policyholders, partners and agents.  Thank you so much for sharing your evening with us and bringing along such great cars!

A wide variety of cars made the cruise down Kings Highway.  Everything from a Model T to a ‘57 Bel Air, and a red hot ’69 Camaro graced our parking lot.  It was also fun to hear about how back in 1967 it only cost $69 for the owner of the beautiful blue ’67 Thunderbird to get its special-ordered paint job!

Congratulations to all of our prize winners of the day, we hope that everyone enjoys their goodies!  We would like to extend a special thank you to GMP Diecast, Hemmings, ACC Mats, Trimparts and all of our other partners who provided giveaways and goodies for our event.

Car Lovers Know Best: Protect That Baby

Car lovers told us what they do to protect their collector vehicles during hurricane season, which runs June 1-November 30.

The top tip: Use a waterproof/padded tarp on the vehicle (even though it’s in the garage) to protect against saturated drywall and debris falling onto the vehicle. It’ll also protect against garden tools and other items in the garage falling on the car during a windstorm.

Read the other six tips at:

We invite you to pass these tips on to your collector clients in your next agency newsletter. They’re all courtesy of the classic car enthusiasts at American Collectors Insurance.
